Harvest Boxes filled and ready to collect

Kirsty from Farnham Assist came along to Westchester House to collect the 52 food boxes all the children had helped to put together.

When asked who the boxes are going to, one of the children said it was for the old people who can’t make it to Sainsbury’s or Tesco’s! Kirsty explained to the children that on a Sunday all the boxes would be given out to the elderly who are invited along for Sunday dinner, a lot of whom live alone and this would be like a Christmas present for them.

A Visit to the Fire Station

August 2015

A Visit to the Fire Station

Some of the children in the preschool room went off to visit the first station and learn how to be a fire fighter for the morning.

This helps encourage children to develop positive relationships with community members, such as fire fighters and police men & women and not just see them as ‘Scary’ people who wear big uniforms. Everyone had a lovely time and the children are now making their own fire station in the pre-school room.

First Class Falconry

July 2015

First Class Falconry

Children, staff and parents were delighted with their highlight of the day for their graduation!

Alan Greenhalgh came along with his birds of prey and falconry display and spent the afternoon at Westchester so that all the children could see them. The younger children were able to stroke the birds, which included a large Siberian Owl called ‘Molly,’ a beautiful Kestrel, and a Peregrine Falcon to name but a few.

The younger children went to see them in small groups and then the older children saw them with their parents after the graduation ceremony. All of the birds of prey were extremely friendly and we hope to invite them back again next year for a repeat show.

Not only have little fingers enjoyed a squidgy sensory experience during the process of creating bird cakes this summer, we are also hoping to reap the rewards attracting more feathered friends to our garden with the hope of them becoming regular visitors.

We will be listening out for their singing and also watching them eat our handmade bird cakes.

It's a Bug's Life

They may not be the cuddliest of creatures, but the children at Westchester House Day Nursery took them to their hearts when they spent a whole day learning all about bugs!

They day started with a bug hunt around the nursery’s garden, during which the children counted how many different bugs they could find and gently picked up some to draw and paint pictures of.

They also learned all about the different things bugs do that make them such an important part of the natural world.
